Week 22: Family Activities

-Remind your family that although we are used to seeing restaurants, drive thru windows, and food courts, in Jesus’ time food was not as easy to find. We have food opportunities everywhere – not so in Jesus’ time. It would have been impossible for the disciples to find enough food for everyone gathered. That amount of food or money was not readily available. This is where God stepped in for a big surprise! When have you been surprised by God?

-Bake or buy different kinds of bread (muffins, bagels, crackers count also!)over the next few weeks to taste at home. Talk about how bread is important in our diets today. It was vitally important in the lives of the people living in Jesus’ time. Most Bibles have maps in them – find one that shows the area of Jesus’ ministry. Find the Sea of Galilee – Jesus spent part of his ministry around the Sea of Galilee. Fish and bread were two important foods in people’s diets during the time of Jesus. Those living near the Sea of Galilee would have access to fish. See if you can find out what kind of fish people ate from the Sea of Galilee.

-Have your family share a time when you offered food to a friend or classmate at snack or meal time. Ask how it felt when they shared their food. Explore with them why it is important for everyone to have enough. Share other times when you have shared food (brought food to church for Bethel’s food pantry, shared food at another pantry, supported a local or global nonprofit that help feed people, etc).
