SWEET SNOWMEN FROM SALEM

Share the Christmas spirit while offering a sweet treat and a pair of gloves to the 400 students at C.T. Vivian Primary School (previously Thomas Jefferson.)

How to participate:

Donate craft supplies as soon as possible:

• NEW kid size knit gloves to fit ages 6-12 (any color or multicolored)

(These can be found at Dollar Stores in 2-pair packs while supplies last.)

• Milk chocolate bars (Hershey’s 1.55 oz. is preferred for size consistency)

• Decorative cording or thin ribbon, lengths of 12 inches or more

(Yarn or curling ribbon can also be used but donations are not needed for these.)

Make-and-Take Craft Packet available Nov. 21 & Nov. 28:

• Pick up craft packets at Salem to make at home or with other Salem friends

Make at Home:

• Buy your own supplies and make the snowmen (see below)

ALL donations and completed snowmen must be brought to Salem NO LATER than SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5th.

This gives time for any additional snowmen to be made before getting them to C.T. Vivian the following week.

If more snowmen are received than needed for C.T. Vivian’s enrollment of 400, they will be distributed to other local children agencies that we support like Crittenton Centers or the Children’s Home. No snowman will be wasted!

Questions? Need items delivered or picked up? Call or text Kris Griffith at 309-370-2336 or email griffdk@comcast.net.

If dropping items off during the week, church hours are 8am–2pm on Mondays–Thursdays and 8am–noon on Fridays.

HOW-TO-MAKE SWEET SNOWMEN FROM SALEM

1) Use a half sheet of white printer paper to wrap the candy bar like a present.

2) Put a pair of gloves inside each other (put one glove on your hand and then put the other glove on over it).

3) Put the glove cuff over the candy bar to be the “hat” and cord, ribbon, or yarn around it.

4) Tie cord, ribbon, or yarn halfway between the “hat” and bottom to be the “scarf” and tape the back to secure.

5) Draw eyes, a carrot nose, a dotted mouth, and buttons using markers, crayons, or colored pencils.

Snowmen may be returned partially done. For example, if you don’t want to draw the face, leave it blank and it will be completed at church. A gift tag from Salem will be attached prior to distributing the snowmen.

Share the spirit of giving by including the young people in your lives with this project – maybe make it an after Thanksgiving dinner activity. Keep in mind that the snowmen faces do NOT have to be a work of art. They will be unwrapped and enjoyed.
