Family Activities – Week 13

-Remind your family that in Bible times, parents told stories about the mighty things God has done. Remind them that there weren’t books, tv, or computers to learn about God. People told stories and passed them down from generation to generation. After the angel’s visit, Mary went to tell her story to Elizabeth. Who can you tell about God? What mighty things has God done for your family?

-As Mary was waiting for Jesus to be born, she probably prepared things to get ready. That is what the season of Advent is for us – preparing for the celebration of Jesus being born on Christmas Day. Talk about ways that your family prepares for the birth of Jesus during Advent (put up a tree, set up a nativity, making/buying gifts for others, doing things for others, lighting a candle, sending cards, reading the Bible, Advent devotions, etc.)

-Think about how excited Elizabeth and Mary must have been knowing they were going to have babies. Talk about how hard it was to wait for them, and remind your family that they had to be patient. Talk with your family about times when they were waiting for something exciting and had to be patient. We can have patience during this exciting time of year as we wait to celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas.

-Mary sang a beautiful song of praise. She sang to thank God for blessing her. We can sing to thank God for sending faithful people to teach us about God’s love. Sing some Christmas carols together. Talk about people that God has sent to you (parents, teachers, pastor, friends, grandparents, neighbors, etc.).

-Talk about things you can do at home or school to “be faithful.” Some examples: read a Bible story, help in the kitchen, take out the garbage, clean up in the yard, make a card for someone, pray, tell someone that God loves them, hug someone, sing a song about God).

-Did you know? Angel is the Greek word for “messenger,” though angles are often ascribed other roles. Gabriel is, along with Michael, the most prominent angel in biblical tradition.
